Thing 24

Now that I'm done I spent time today looking at many other participants' blogs. I found some great ideas. I thought Janelle's idea of using You Tube or Teacher Tube for finding book talks was great. It is amazing what some of the other participants learned and ideas they had.

Three words on a stick: Excellent learning experience

I really enjoyed this. At some points I was very frustrated but in the end I felt I learned many new things. If something more was offered I would definitely try it. I remember doing the first post and thinking about how scary it was. I look at my blog now and I have impressed myself. Blogging alone was simply a great learning experience and then to learn so much on top of that was just like icing on a cake.

I like the suggestion of adding the blog to my e-mail. I will have to try to do that in the fall. It would be neat to see if anyone from work checks it out.

Thing 22

I just signed up for the feed for Library2.1
http://explorediscoverplay.blogspot.com. I think since I've figured out the format and that is very similar I could keep doing this and learning. I admit finding time will be difficult. I wish I would stay motivated to keep going. Since school has been out I've spent a lot of time on this (today it is rainy and gloomy and I've been on the computer many hours). I wish there was more time for staff development during the school year.

Thing 21

I found this to be a fun social networking site. I was able to send messages to several people and I eventually figured out how to post the badge to my blog. I feel like it takes me forever to figure some of this out.

I added TeacherLibrarianNing to my Delicious list. I will keep an eye on that site. I haven't joined but want to read it occasionally.

How did I not know that Hennepin County Library had a My Space page. I visit their website frequently and went back to specifically look if there was a link. I guess I'm not sure that I was missing much after I looked at it. To me social networking seems like something that people should do on their free time.

I checked out the My Space page for the UCSC Library Learning2.0. There wasn't much there.

Since My Space is for students over 14 children in our library should not have accounts. I do realize the importance though of educating our students about posting stuff on the internet.

Thing 19

I listened to the Memoirs podcast which was done at MEMO. I was actually in the room when the session was done. I wanted to learn more about podcasting.

I also listened to an MPR podcast on Grammar Grater. This podcast was fantastic. Here is the link to the site http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/podcasts/grammar_grater/ I know someone at work who definitely needs to know about this site.

I want to do podcasting with students but posting it is a bit difficult. The podcasts take up a lot of network space. I'm going to see what I can do with making some booktalk podcasts this fall.

Thing 18 (continued)

I truly enjoyed the You Tube searching. I found some very neat library related videos. There were some that would be fun to make for our library (ie. a tour of the library or a library rap). I do wonder about copyright. Do the people posting the videos have permission? Do I have permission to put it in my blog?

No Cookies in the Library

You might need to turn up the sound.

Thing 17

I wasn't sure how to do the RSS feed even after reading the directions. I also got an error when trying to watch the tutorials that were linked in on the 23 Things blog. When in EBSCO I watched a tutorial that was very well done. I did browse through many of the Elm pages. I use the databases through the Hennepin County Library website. I haven't figured out many of the productivity tools. I do like the idea of having students use ELM as a source to search. The Kid Infobits was very well organized and I also liked how the reading level was labeled.

Thing 16

I looked at the support materials and really liked the Planning for Plagiarims-Proof Assignment. I follow Doug Johnson's blog who was the author of those papers. He has some very good ideas. I had a teacher tell me a student plagiarized her paper. I don't believe the teacher had the student take notes so the student did a bunch of cut and paste. I could see the high school media specialist using the calculator piece.

Thing 15

I have concluded that I am not a gamer. This Thing did not hold my interest. I played the pirate game until I got bored. Other pirates were interacting with me but I didn't find that I had a reason to be playing. I looked at the video about Second Life but wasn't interested in joining. I know that patrons of libraries use computers for gaming. Today I went to the public library to grab a book and saw two young kids on a computer playing some kind of game. I did read the myths about gaming article and I totally agree. I simply am not interested in computer online games.

Thing 14

I liked Library Thing. It was very easy to put a widget together and post it to my blog. I'm wondering if I could use it to post new books to our school website. I would have to send the code to the webmaster to put on the site. I think it would be a great way to make a quick list of new books. I will have to see if I would keep it up for personal use. I like the idea but finding the time for it will be another issue.

Thing 13

I found that I wouldn't use these productivity tools. I did make a timer widget which I liked. I set my iGoogle homepage but wouldn't use it. I liked the Spongecell calendar. I signed up for Remember the Milk but don't see myself logging in to use it. I much prefer my hard copy to do list. Backpack was fantastic but then it costs money. I don't believe I would pay for it. I'm not sure that I work with others willing to pay for a web organizer page. It appears that it would be useful if everyone were using it. I do know that a lot of the features in this Thing are similar to things in Outlook.

I was able to edit the Google Document. It had something about the good old days which I was able to write behind that my father reminds me about them often.

I was not able to figure out how to edit the Zoho document.

It was very fun. I also believe it would be useful. I wonder how difficult it is to set it up.

Our founding fathers might be turning over in their graves.

I liked that I could customize Reddit. I liked the organization of the Mixx page. The newsvine front page looked most like a newspaper front page. I liked that about it. I didn't care much for Digg.

I did share to Newsvine. There was a comic with Hillary Clinton the superdelegates (who were cartoon super heros). I thought it was creative.

I wish I had some ideas as to how I would use this at school.

Thing 11

I think this could be a great tool for research. Students can access the bookmarks at school and at home. Our teachers usually list websites for research on our school website which basically allows for us to choose more appropriate sites for younger students.

I personally like looking at things I tag and see what other people who have tagged it have also tagged becuase of the similarity in content.

I could see staff using this and making it an easy way to organize their favorites. It is difficult to have favorites on both a school and home log in. This would allow them to access the favorites from either location.
